Overview

Ru’yat al-Shabab is a comprehensive, multi-phase initiative designed to strengthen youth leadership, civic engagement, and institutional trust throughout Iraq. The project focuses on empowering young women and men to become active agents of peace, fostering dialogue and collaboration between communities, civil society, and local institutions. By investing in this new generation of leaders and mentors, Ru’yat al-Shabab seeks to promote inclusive governance, sustainable peace, and to actively prevent the marginalisation and radicalisation of youth.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the capacities of youth, civil society and local institutions to engage in participatory planning and dialogue

  • Empower young men and women to promote dialogue and counter violent extremism in their communities

  • Encourage youth participation and influence in peace, security, and human rights decision-making processes

  • Reinforce the institutional recognition of youth voices within Iraq’s emerging National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security

Project phases

  • Phase I (2024–2025) laid the groundwork for youth leadership and civic participation across Iraq through capacity-building activities ,country-wide campaigns, and advocacy efforts. This phase culminated in a national conference on Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) and Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) held in Baghdad just before the country’s parliamentary election of 2025

  • Phase II (2025–2026) is expanding the project’s impact through advanced training programmes, peer-to-peer mentoring, and a policy-oriented roadmap seeking to amplify youth voices in Iraq’s governance and peacebuilding processes.

Methodology

Ru’yat al-Shabab applies an experiential learning and participatory approach, combining theory and practice through workshops, online modules, and local micro-projects. The initiative draws on the UN Youth, Peace and Security Agenda (UNSCR 2250) and promotes youth-led action to support the Iraqi National Action Plan implementation.
