Empowering Sudanese Women for Leadership in Peacebuilding and Mediation

April 30

In our interactive session co-organised with the Horn Center for Democracy, we brought together Sudanese women leaders, peace practitioners, and South Sudanese peacebuilders to exchange strategies and lived experiences around women’s leadership in peace and mediation. Through storytelling, panel talks, and open dialogue, the session spotlighted the power of cross-border solidarity, and the urgent need to strengthen women’s roles in sustaining peace across the region.

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda, supporting inclusive peacebuilding through research, advocacy and direct engagement. As women are often the most affected by war, yet remain underrepresented in peace processes, strengthening their role is essential to building just and lasting peace. One key step forward is the creation of a formal regional network of women mediators — a tool still missing in the Horn of Africa. Such networks, already active in other regions, provide training, technical support and political backing to amplify women’s voices in both local and international peace efforts. This is our goal with the project Towards a Regional Network of Women Mediators in the Horn of Africa.
