Towards a Network of Women Mediators in the Horn of Africa

March 11 - March 12

On 11–12 March, we organised a two-day, in-person workshop in Nairobi, in the framework of the project “Towards a Regional Network of Women Mediators for the Horn of Africa”. The initiative, carried out in partnership with Muslim Women’s Advancement of Rights and Protection (MWARP) and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, seeks to strengthen women’s roles in peacebuilding and mediation across the region. Designed as a space for open and constructive exchange, the workshop brought together around 20 women mediators to assess current needs and gaps on peace mediation in the region. Through dialogue, peer learning, and expert input, the participants outlined key priorities and explored a possible roadmap for future collaboration and action.

Contributions from experts such as Ms Leila Lounes (EU Special Representative’s Office) and Ms Jackline Mbogo (Kenya WPS Working Group) enriched the discussion with strategic insights. Representing AP, Bernardo Monzani, Head of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, and Giulia Ferraro, Project Manager, who emphasised how the workshop, and the project more broadly, marked a significant step towards building stronger, more connected efforts to advance women’s leadership in mediation. It reaffirmed the value of creating inclusive spaces that allow for reflection, alignment, and collective action – essential ingredients for impactful and sustainable peacebuilding.
